Alternative art supplies?

Sun Jul 22, 2007, 7:53 PM
So why do art supplies cost so much money? I really need to find a good place to get cheap or free stuff. any suggestions?

There's always digital mediums, or dumpster diving. I need to find a free substitute for acetate and canvas frames.

Poetry

  • Listening to: Qawwali... what else
  • Reading: Bulleh Shah and Faiz ahmed Faiz
  • Playing: Sitar
So my band Diacritical is no more... Kinda sucks, but it was bound to happen.I was getting burned out on the project. I got written up in newsweek in an article highlighting "Muslim punks" Which i guess is cool but i didn't like exactly how i was portrayed, but that's the media for you. Sensationalism. I wished they had talked more about sufism. I have been reading a lot of Urdu poetry like Faiz and Iqbal, getting into punjabi stuff like Bulleh Shah to and of course always reading Rumi. Rumi paints this picture of the Beloved that is so beautiful, i wish more people saw it the way he did or even knew his work. I can't believe it took me so long to find him. I've been dreaming about becoming a malang or a dervish. Like the sadhus of india, free of possession and materialism. Western society really blows, i stopped watching TV and listening to the radio and have just been reading. It seems like every time i turn on the TV someone is killing some one in the name of God. All the while i have been delving into my own personal relationship with the divine and pondering the meaning of esoteric love. I have been compiling poetry for years in hopes that one day i might release a book. Some of it is political, some satirical some jaded and most recently i have been exploring ghazal and sufi ideas of love in my poems. So i'm going to post a bunch and see if i get any responses.

Tra la la la la update

WOW It has been a while, I went to India for a while then came back and i moved into a loft in an Artist community i don't know anyone around here and i have no furniture. That's my update... ha ha, uh yea...

OK well i'm hoping that i will get to paint more now and work BIG. that's all i want to do. I want to get away from spraypaint and get back to brushes may be use airbrush, i dunno. but for sure I'm going to start doing murals, in the styles Kieth haring seth tobocman. Benn getting deeper into sufism, and want to try doing surahs from the quran but in graf style instead of traditional calligraphy.

i'm planning on working on a solo album. it will be like my band Diacritical meets my electronic project Evilartform but with even more indian classical music and qawalli mixed-in.And may be more indie rock and less heavy rock. We'll see how it turns out. (any ideas for names??)

Diacritical is goin on tour soon and our CD is available on CDbaby as well as I tunes and all those other mp3 sites.
